What is blackwood?
Blackwood is a small town in Kansas with a long and complicated history, dating back to the late 1700s. It was first settled by Sir Marcus JamesBlackwood, who established the town as part of his own independent colony. Unlike many settlements of that era, Sir Marcus openly opposed slavery and banned it entirely within his colony’s borders. This decision made him a controversial figure and ultimately led to his death, but his beliefs did not die with him. His son, Sir Marcus Blackwood II, honored his father’s principles and continued enforcing the ban. In the generations that followed, his children and grandchildren upheld that same law, preservingBlackwood as a place defined by its independence and its rejection of slavery long before it was abolished nationwide.
For most of its history, Blackwood remained a quiet and stable town. Its isolation and strong founding principles shaped a close-knit community where families stayed for generations. It was known as a peaceful place, far removed from the chaos of larger cities.
By the 21st century, however,Blackwood had become something very different.
The town no longer reflects the ideals it was founded on. Violence, corruption, and fear have quietly taken hold, replacing the stability it was once known for. No single event explains the change, and no one agrees on when it truly began. But longtime residents often point to the years after 2000 as the turning point—when things started to feel different. Subtle at first. Then undeniable.
Many who grew up in Blackwood have since left, searching for the peace the town once offered. Those who remain either refuse to abandon it, or have nowhere else to go.
Blackwood still stands. But it isn’t what it used to be.
